Monday on the Couch: Press Freedom in Europe

May 14, 2018 18:30 - 20:00 CEST
iac Berlin, Linienstraße 65A, 10119 Berlin, Germany

The 2018 World Press Freedom Index, compiled by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), reflects growing animosity towards journalists. Hostility towards the media, openly encouraged by democratically-elected political leaders, and the efforts of authoritarian regimes to export their vision of journalism pose a threat to democracies, and challenge journalists all around the world. This also applies to the European Union, as the deadly attacks on the investigative journalists Daphne Caruana Galizia in Malta and Ján Kuciak in Slovakia show, and where, in some countries, restrictive laws present new challenges to the media sector.

What are the effects of such threats and assaults on the press freedom in Europe? And how do new media laws like those in Poland and Hungary affect free reporting in the European Union?

In our next Monday on the Couch session, you will have the chance to discuss these questions with our experts Christian Mihr, Executive Director of Reporters without Borders Germany and Dóra Diseri, correspondent for the Hungarian TV station HírTV and project manager at Network for Reporting on Eastern Europe (n-ost).

Monday on the Couch is a discussion format within the Bosch Alumni Network. One Monday each month, we are inviting experts from our network to the iac Community Space to discuss a current political or societal topic. After the discussion, there is time to continue the conversation over drinks. Are you interested in organizing a Monday on the Couch event? Please feel free to send us some lines with you idea at!
